Camouflage, Blending In With Nature…

                                                                                                                                                                                                       Gecko

For survival what all we do… Animals also do a lot of things to live here… Many animals have evolved to exhibit some form of camouflage, which is an adaptation that allows animals to blend in with certain aspects of their environment. Camouflage increases an organism's chance of survival by hiding it from predators. This gives the animal a higher probability of being able to successfully reproduce and carry on the species. Camouflage is also used by some predators as a tool for hunting. For them, being able to blend in with their environment gives them an element of surprise and increases their chance of successfully obtaining food...

Let’s today find out some masters of disguise playing hide-and-seek… Stare at these pictures and find out yourself….

Bird’s flu

Is bird flu Bird’s flu? Of course, like humans, birds also get flu and is known as avian influenza”. It is caused by viruses that infect birds and make them ill. It is an infectious disease of birds caused by type A strains of the influenza virus.  The virus is spread when wild birds pass the virus along to birds such as chickens or ducks that are being raised for human consumption. While the wild birds do not seem to be affected by the virus, the livestock that contract the virus get very sick and many die. There are 16 different avian flu types. The H5N1 strain is the one that causes the most concern, because it is the most virulent; the deadliest.

Next doubt arising in minds is this can be transferred to humans. Even though human infection with H5N1 is rare. Most cases of H5N1 infection are thought to have occurred as a result of direct or close contact with sick or infected poultry. Human infection is still very rare, but the virus that causes the infection in birds might change, or mutate, to more easily infect humans. This could lead to a pandemic, a worldwide outbreak of the illness. Influenza A virus subtype H7N9 is a novel avian influenza virus which causes raising concern. It was first reported to have infected humans in 2013 in China.

H7N9 Avian Virus

How can this cause? During an outbreak of bird flu, people who have contact with infected birds can become sick. It may also be possible to catch bird flu by eating poultry or eggs that are not well cooked or through contact with a person who has it. Bird flu can make people very sick or even cause death. Antiviral medicines may make the illness less severe, and may help prevent the flu in people who were exposed to it. There is currently no vaccine..

What are the symptoms? How can it be avoided? Symptoms occur approximately two to eight days after exposure, on average. Infected people experience typical flu-like symptoms, including fever, cough, sore throat, and muscle aches. Some people also have nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, or eye infections. This can progress to pneumonia and even cause respiratory failure. To prevent avian influenza:
  • If you are in an area where avian influenza is a risk, protect yourself by practicing good hand hygiene.
  • If you will be handling birds known or thought be infected, protect yourself with gloves, goggles, a medical gown, shoe covers, and a mask designed for very small particles, such as a tuberculosis mask.
  • There is little known about transmission of avian influenza between humans, but to be on the safe side, do not allow secretions, sneezing, or coughing to contaminate other humans, particularly children, the elderly, and the immunocompromised..

As already discussed, there is no commercially available vaccine for humans against bird flu strains. There are "antiviral" drugs like oseltamivir or zanamivir available that help treat the signs and symptoms of flu if they are taken within the first 48 hours of flu symptoms. Researchers are still continuing their work on other types of bird flu vaccines…Since prevention is always better, try to avoid infection in any situation and stay protected…..

Hope to see your comments on same…….

Cancer what is it really............

What is It really???

After heart disease, cancer is the most dangerous disease of mankind. Early detection of cancer can greatly improve the odds of successful treatment and survival. Cancer is characterized by out-of-control cell growth. There are over 100 different types of cancer, and each is classified by the type of cell that is initially affected. It hams the body when the cells divide uncontrollably to form masses of tissues called tumours. These cells don’t die, i.e. they don’t follow an orderly path of growth, division and death.

Why it's not affecting few of as even if living in same environment???

We may think answer is so simple, it may be smoking, or drinking too much, or eating a very unhealthy diet or by hereditary etc. But still the real reason remains unrevealed. The main suspect behind all these is radiation. If it was due to the radiation, then why not to people working in a nuclear reactor. Some occupations are exposed to radiation without being classed as nuclear energy workers. Airline crews receive occupational exposures from cosmic radiation because of reduced atmospheric shielding at altitude. Mine workers receive occupational exposures to radon, especially in uranium mines. Anyone working in a granite building, such as the US Capitol, is likely to receive a dose from natural uranium in the granite.

In fact we are exposed to low levels of radiations all the time. Even the fruits we are eating contain radiation; for example banana which is rich in potassium is radioactive. Each time you eat a banana, you are exposed to 0.1 microsieverts of radiation. This means eating 20 million bananas at one time might kill you due to radiation exposure. But let's face it, if you're eating 20 million bananas, the radiation is the least of your worries. so radiation alone is not the culprit.

Most existing cancer drugs and treatments are poisons, designed to attack and hopefully kill cancer cells, or at least slow their growth. But most of these treatments attack not just cancer cells, but healthy cells, too. Thus, people taking the drugs too often suffer horrible side effects. Therefore treatment that can target just the tumours while sparing other tissue is highly sought after. It may be a new drug or machine, a new invention, or a new way to give treatment. Nano-robots is such a vision..

It’s simply a mobile robot that can be created with existing nano-technology that can be used to seek out and destroy inimical tissue within the human body that cannot be accessed by other means. While the technique may eventually be used to treat small numbers of cells in the bloodstream, this is normally done effectively by white blood cells and antibodies, and this technique is not intended to replace that. The specified goal is to be able to destroy tumorous tissue in such a way as to minimize the risk of causing or allowing a recurrence of the growth in the body.

The technique is intended to be able to treat tumours that cannot be accessed via conventional surgery, such as deep brain tumours. However, since the technique is extremely effective and much less debilitating than conventional surgery, it should be used, if possible, as a replacement for conventional surgery in this application.  It is successfully tested in mice and we can hope that it will turn into a safer anti-cancer treatment in future…
